DNI or NIE? We translate both cards — and the certificate
The procedure decides: if your identity must appear in a foreign file, you translate the document that proves it. These are the two cases we handle every day:
Your Spanish DNI, for use abroad
Inheritances, property purchases, marriages or powers of attorney signed abroad: the foreign notary or registry requires your DNI translated to add it to the file. It usually travels together with the passport or with civil-status certificates.
Your NIE or TIE, for your home country
Banks, authorities and courts in your country that need proof of your legal residence in Spain: the card or the NIE certificate is filed in translation, often together with the certificate of empadronamiento.
DNI, NIE and TIE: what each one is
Three abbreviations that get mixed up every day — worth telling apart before ordering, because you translate the document, not the number:
- DNI Spanish nationals
- Documento Nacional de Identidad — the Spanish national identity card. It proves identity and Spanish nationality. A physical card with front and back: both sides are translated.
- NIE a number
- Número de Identidad de Extranjero — the foreigner identification number. It is not a card: it is the number the Police assign to a foreign national, and it appears on certificates and resolutions. You translate the document that contains it.
- TIE residents
- Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero — the physical card proving legal residence in Spain, which includes the NIE. Translated in full, like the DNI, both sides.
One tip that saves double orders. The DNI and NIE hardly ever travel alone: the procedures that require them — inheritances, marriages, visas, bank accounts — usually also demand civil-status, criminal-record or empadronamiento certificates. Why a sworn translation and not a standard one? Because banks, notaries, registries and foreign authorities only accept translations bearing the signature, stamp and accreditation number of a sworn translator appointed by the MAEC. An ordinary translation, however accurate, has no official validity: the file is returned and the procedure starts over. Translations into English are signed by our in-house translator, appointed by the MAEC.

How much does a sworn translation of a DNI or NIE cost?
It is the most affordable sworn translation there is: a single card, quoted as a complete document, not by lines or single pages. What is the difference between NIE and TIE when translating?
The NIE is a number the Police assign to a foreign national and it may appear on a simple paper certificate; the TIE is the physical card proving residence, which contains that number. You translate the specific document you are asked for: NIE certificate, TIE or DNI. If you are unsure which one your procedure needs, send us what you have and we will guide you.
Do I have to send the original document?
No. We work from a photo or scan of both sides: you never part with your document. We only ask that the number, the dates and the photograph be clearly visible, without glare or cropping.
Does the sworn translation of the DNI or NIE expire?
The translation does not expire: it certifies the document as it was on the date of translation. However, if you renew the document and the validity date or the format changes, the authority will ask for a translation of the new one, because the data no longer match.
Do I need an apostille on the DNI or NIE?
Hardly ever: as identity documents, most authorities accept the sworn translation on its own. Some foreign registries ask instead for a certified copy of the document before translating. Tell us the country and the procedure and we will confirm what they will require — the apostille, if needed, is handled in the same order.
In which format will I receive the translation?
As a digitally signed PDF from the sworn translator, with the same legal validity as paper, and optionally on paper by courier anywhere in Spain or collected at our offices in Adeje, Seville and Málaga.
