A Sworn Translator (also known as an official translator) is a professional who is authorised to translate, sign and stamp translations in order to convert them into official, internationally valid sworn documents. This means that the Sworn Translator acts as a notary public, a notary of languages, whose stamp and signature guarantee that the translation copy is complete and faithful to its original.

In Spain, Sworn Translators are regulated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC). In other countries the requirements vary: for example, some countries require an oath to be sworn before a judge or notary. However, any Sworn Translation respecting local protocols is fully valid in any country regardless of the Sworn Translator who has carried it out.

The Spanish Public Administration recognises as valid translations with electronic signatures, which will have exactly the same format as a physical document, but with additional information related to the sworn translator.
